The ancient Romans believed that their sea-god, Neptune, rode in a chariot led by these magical creatures. They seem an unlikely mix of characteristics — the majestic head of a dragon leads down to the prehensile(能卷抓的)tail of a monkey. Their skin, stretched over a knobby skeleton, resembles the armor of an insect. And free-moving eyes circle like those of a chameleon(变色龙). Yet seahorses are simply a type of fish. Their habitats range from the shores of Nova Scotia as far south as Tasmania, from the shallows of the Mediterranean, to the English Channel. Somewhere in the beds of most coastal waters, seahorses can be found. To maneuver in their seabed homes, seahorses are designed for stability rather than speed. A dorsal fin(背鳍)propels them forward, while two small side fins allow them to turn and steer. They spend most time anchored to whatever hold is handy — seagrass, sponge, or soft coral. From their mooring points, they rove out to catch small creature floating by. Seahorses have neither teeth nor stomach, yet somehow manage to digest thousands of shrimp a day. With independent eye movement, they can search for food while also looking for danger. To protect against predators, seahorses are masters of camouflage(伪装). Some allow algae(水藻)to grow on their skin, developing appendages(附属物)that blend with weeds and grasses. To the untutored eye, seahorses are virtually invisible, blending in with the seagrass that they inhabit. Every morning, each seahorse does a greeting dance with its partner. The couple entwine tails and march through the seagrass together. Seahorses make the most faithful of partners. They pair up for life and scorn all others.
